Nancy G. Brinker, the former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, is the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the nation's largest funder of research dedicated solely to breast cancer, and Race for the Cure. The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 to honor the memory of her sister, Susan, whom she lost to the disease. The Race for the Cure was created the following year in an effort to raise community awareness and local funding for breast cancer education and scientific research. Today, the Race for the Cure is the world's largest 5K race series. The recipient of numerous awards, Brinker was named one of the 100 most important women of the 20th century by Ladies Home Journal and one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in America by Biography Magazine.
