FasterCures hosted over 100 congressional staffers, patient advocates, academics and drug developers at a Capitol Hill briefing about the importance of federal support for translational research, the phase of medical R&D between the birth of a basic scientific discovery made in the lab and when a pharmaceutical company tests out a potential new therapy with patients -- or, more plainly put, "the stuff in between" microscope and marketplace. The Celebration of Science, held Sept. 7-9 in Washington, focused on jumpstarting a new era of scientific discovery. The event highlighted the economic and social benefits of scientific research and how it improves lives around the world. The weekend included panels and brief presentations, a full day of activities on the campus of the National Institutes of Health, and a FasterCures working meeting on accelerating innovation in the biosciences. Participants included more than 1,000 current and former elected officials, heads of government agencies, major philanthropists, leaders of academic research centers, patient advocacy groups, distinguished scientists, and industry CEOs.
